Mad Science Lab

Mad Science Lab is dedicated to producing unique analog products for manipulating audio. These products are designed and created by James Gideon. Clicking on an image on this page will take you to additional information about the unit.

December 2007 Mad Science Lab has moved to a new location

some circuit boards for SSM 2040 chips. You supply the chips Information here

Above the SSM1, a single voltage controlled filter with voltage control of the frequency cut off of the filter as well as the resonance amount. Based on the layout of Synthesis Technology MOTM style modular synths. This product has one SSM 2040 low pass filter that is based on early synth designs by Emu Systems. This project is in its third board revision. (Click on picture for more info)

SSM1 Status 5/2007 ---I have 3 of the 7 boards built. I am awaiting more panels and brackets before I do a run of 5. Currently testing different input /output gain structures.

Above the SSM2, a dual voltage controlled filter with two low frequency oscillators that can modulate the frequency cut off of the filter as well as the resonance amount. This product has two SSM 2040 low pass filters that are based on early synth designs by Emu Systems. This project is in its second board revision. (Click on picture for more info)

SSM1 Status 5/2007 ---The third revision boards are now fully tested. The SSM 2 is not really feasible as a product due to wiring and complexity, but it is something I will enjoy using. You can use this concept to build your own filter unit. 2 LPF VCF's 2 LFO's with 2 mixers to mix the 2 LFO's.

Older Projects

The two units below are single voltage controlled low pass filters based on the SSM 2040 filter chip.

Below a basic dual low frequency oscillator. Each oscillator produces a square triangle and sine wave.

Above the older single filter on the left and the latest Dual version on the right.
